CENTRAL CITY - Surrey dentists provided $6,700 in free dentistry for families without coverage last Friday (March 23) at Central City Shopping Centre, in partnership with SuperChefs Cookery for Kids.

Dr. Greg Chang, founder of SuperChefs, said doctors and staff at Surrey Place Dental Group, provided the services in promotion of the upcoming Oral Health Month in April.

Patients were screened by fourth-year UBC dental hygienestudents under the direction of Charn Dhami, faculty of dental hygiene. The faculty routinely provides free dental hygiene treatment at a community site in Guildford called the Orchard, run by the Union Gospel Mission.

"The people seen at the site are economically challenged, and the Orchard provides them with subsidized housing and food bank donations," explained Chang. "Thedental hygiene students are able to provide these people with preventative hygiene services, but the best we can do when they have decay on their teeth, or need other restorative procedures, is refer them to a low-cost dental clinic."

Unfortunately, even with the low-cost clinics being approximately 30 to 40 percent cheaper than the dental fee guide, the cost is still beyond what these individuals can afford, Chang added.

SuperChefs co-ordinated the event to provide dentistry services at Central City, and each individual left with a fruit basket provided by Chang to encourage healthy eating.

Every year, SuperChefs Cookery partners with Surrey Schools to provide free summer cooking camps to kids most in need, mainly targeting schools in North Surrey.

SuperChefs has so far worked with about a dozen elementary schools, and plans are to run the camps again this summer in July and August.

These camps are free of charge to Surrey students with the support of the Canada Student Summer Job program (Service Canada) and allows Surrey teens to help run the program, mentor the younger kids, and develop ties in the community.

SuperChefs Cookery for Kids is based in Surrey and helps test recipes for a Westin Brand standard. As a result of that partnership with Westin, the Cookery has spread from Surrey to China, India, Spain, Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia and over 20 major cities in North America including New York, Washington D.C., Boston, Phoenix, Detroit.
